In the stillness of rural Zanzibar, Tanzania, Ashura Hassan, 17, confided in me that she’d like to become a professional singer and artist. This is a big deal, seeing how her community is devoutly Muslim and such aspirations are often frowned upon. Nevertheless, Ashura’s mom was laid back enough to allow me to transform her only daughter into a model.
With the sun scorching everything and our photo session attracting curious stares, Ashura and I made our way along the coast, snapping away. I was even able to procure her to the city, where photo sessions seem less out-of-place. Needless to say, she was a natural.
